What is the purpose of a title sequence and Film Opening?

A title sequence/Film Opening is a clever way of presenting the cast and crew involved in the production of the film, but it also shows the credits of the film. this is an excellent promotion technique as it gives a chance to showcase any Popular or up and coming actors, and creates last minute buzz just before the film starts.

I've also learnt that that there are certain conventions of a title sequence that are USUALLY found in:

  • Narrative
  • Glimpse of story line
  • Production Company/Distribution Company Ident
  • Credits
  • Film Name
  • Shortened Cast list
  • Establishing Shot
  • Sound/Special Effects
  • Setting
  • Close up Shots
  • Images that are relevant to the film but not immediately a part of the narrative

The title sequence to 'Prometheus' shows the the audience of a
glimpse of the Genetic issues faced in the film.
The title sequence doesn't give away any of the story but it still relates to it, whilst also highlighting some important elements of the film.

A film opening will never not have an Distribution/Production Company indent.
