What is Genre

What I learned about Genre

Definition:A way of categorising a particular type of film

Here are some terms which fall under this category and also relevant to the world of film:

Sub-Genre: A subdivision of a genre of film

Hybrid Genre: A genre which blends themes and element from two or more different genre

Code & Conventions: Conventions- General acceptation way of doing things. Codes- System of signs which create meaning

Genre Tropes: An over used theme.

Inception Analysis based on still

What genre do you think this is?: Action

What are the main generic signifiers (Tropes)?:Gun On Bed, characters seem to be dead or at least faint, formal clothing, Actor (Joseph Gordon-Levitt can be associated with action films)

How easy is it to identify the genre: It is fairy easy to make a naive assumption that this is an action due to the codes and conventions seen in the still eg. gun and room full of unconscious people.

Poetic Justice based on still

What genre do you think this is?: Drama/Romance

What are the main generic signifires (Tropes)?: He looks disheartened which I could connote and say that he is going through some issues, body language, facial expressions

How easy is it to identify the genre: Very easy through use of plot as well as mise en scene and soundscape

Menace to Society Based on still

What genre do you think this is?:  Drama/Crime

What are the main generic signifires (Tropes)?: Colours that are gang affiliated, facial expressions, props and characters

How easy is it to identify the genre: This also is another film which genre's easy to identify due to obvious stereotypes that we would notice based on previous assumptions made about gang life in america
