RESEARCH - what is genre?

GENRE - genre is a way to categorize different products that share similar features

SUB-GENRE - the subdivision of a genre

CODES &CONVENTIONS - Are used together in any study of genre.Codes are systems of signs, which create meaning, Codes and conventions are used together in any study of genre – it is not enough to discuss a technical code used such as camera work, without saying how it is conventionally used in a genre

GENRE TROPES -are common or overused theme or device.

HYBRID GENRE-is a genre that blends themes and elements from two or more genres, for example a romantic comedy.

3 stills from my favorite genres.
My first film is 'Clueless' it is a chick flick from 1995. Chick flick/Rom com is one of my favorite genres as i find them more entertaining than normal romantic films as they provide humor and less soppy, sad moments. The main tropes are the costumes as they are all wearing bright colours, they are in a school which is a convention of chick flicks. There is bright lighting which expresses a happy mood.

My second genre is Spies. here is a still from the film 'Kingsman' which is a spy film with Colin Firth. Instantly from this still it is clear that the film will involve violence, however balanced out with the expensive looking equipment and the man in the suite makes it look more in the spy genre. Genre tropes in this still are guns, other weapons and a man in a expensive looking suit.
