RESEARCH - BFI Statistics yearbook

In order to successfully research into genre and audience and to automatically make choices about my own film genre and target audience, I need to develop my knowledge of the success of different film genres at the box office and preferences amongst different types of audience. I looked into some chapters of the BFI statistic year book  and I found the information below:

GENRE
The 3 most successful genres at the UK box office are:
                                              Animation

                                                                                         Action

                                               Comedy

The 3 least popular or successful genres at the UK box office are:
                                                                                      Romance

                                            Documentary

                                                                                        War

The film genre which had the most films released in 2013-14 (not the most successful but the biggest number of films made) is Comedy.

There were 153 comedy, 47 action and 33 animated films made.
This information about genres tells me that animation,  comedy and action were most enjoyable among the audience in 2013-2014, unlike documentary, romance and war.

AUDIENCES
The age group which made up the largest proportion of cinema admissions in the UK (who went to the cinema most) is between 15- 24 year olds.
The comedy film which was most successful with this age group was Hangover 3.
The film which was most popular with the over 50s was Sunshine on Leith- Comedy, Drama and Musical.

The genres which were most popular with men were thriller, action and comedy films.
UK films appealed most to 45 – 54 audience type

The 3 films which were most popular with the 7-14 age group were One Direction: This Is Us , Wreck-It Ralph and Despicable Me 2, which suggests that the audience of children prefers animation films.
The 3 films which were most popular with the 35-44 age group were Frozen, The Croods and Jack and the Giant Slayer.

The 3 films which were most popular with the 25-34 age group were Django Unchained, Fast & Furious 6 and 26 Rush.
